Ewa Frysztak Szemioth

Bio

Ewa Frysztak-Szemioth (born September 3, 1930 – died August 7, 2021) was a Polish graphic artist and book illustrator.

Before World War II, she lived with her parents in Wadowice. In September 1939, her family shared the fate of many other civilians — they were evacuated, displaced, and lost their possessions. Shortly after returning to Wadowice, they were forced to relocate to Kraków.

She studied book graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, where she earned her degree in 1955. In 1954, she began an internship at the State Publishing Institute (Państwowy Instytut Wydawniczy). Over the years, she designed book covers, dust jackets, illustrations for both adult and children’s books, as well as postcards and posters.

Frysztak-Szemioth was responsible for the graphic design of several prominent series, including The Club of Interesting Books, 20th Century Novels, and The Library of Contemporary Criticism. She collaborated with several major Polish publishing houses, such as the State Publishing Institute, Wydawnictwo Literackie, Nasza Księgarnia, and Pax Publishing Institute.
