Skip to content(born in Warsaw) — Polish illustrator and graphic designer, graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw.
Since the mid-20th century, she collaborated with children’s publishers, creating illustrations and coloring books distinguished by poetic humor, clear visual storytelling, and a strong decorative style. Her work was featured in numerous publications, including those by Nasza Księgarnia, one of Poland’s leading children’s book publishers.
For many years, Dutkowska specialized in children’s book illustration, designing not only illustrations but also covers and small graphic elements. She was particularly active in the second half of the 20th century, occasionally creating posters as well.
Privately, she was partnered with fellow artist Bohdan Bocianowski.
Artistic Style: Dutkowska’s illustrations are approachable, whimsical, and infused with poetic charm. Her visual language often features simplified figures, decorative elements, and dynamic, engaging compositions tailored to the child’s eye.
Themes: Her work centers around the world of childhood, fairy-tale motifs, travel adventures, and gentle humor, always with a clear and accessible pictorial narrative designed for young readers.
Barbara Dutkowska’s works were featured in both national and international exhibitions. Her illustrations are referenced in collections and archives of Polish illustration, and original editions featuring her work are sought after by antique book dealers and collectors.
Today, her designs are considered valuable examples of mid-century Polish children’s illustration, and continue to attract interest from art historians and enthusiasts.
