Bogusław Orliński

(1941–2022)
Polish illustrator, graphic artist, and painter.

 

Biography

Bogusław Orliński was born on May 2, 1941, in Warsaw, Poland. Between 1961 and 1967, he studied at the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he earned his diploma with distinction in the studio of Professor Artur Nacht-Samborski.

 

Career

Orliński worked across illustration, graphic design, and easel painting. For many years, he served as a graphic editor at the renowned children’s publishing house Nasza Księgarnia. Over the course of his career, he illustrated more than one hundred books for children and young readers, including classic fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen.

 

Awards and Exhibitions

In 1979, he received the Prime Minister’s Award for his artistic contributions to children’s and youth literature. That same year, he was also awarded by Alcro Beckers in the competition “Contemporary Polish Book Art” for his illustrations to Scandinavian Fairy Tales.

His work was internationally exhibited, including appearances at:

  • The Biennial of Illustration in Bratislava

  • The Bologna Children’s Book Fair

  • And exhibitions in Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig, Düsseldorf, London, Tokyo, Prague, Rio de Janeiro, Sofia, Copenhagen, and Belgrade.

 

Artistic Style

Bogusław Orliński favored a realistic visual language, while skillfully weaving in elements of imagination and expression. His illustrations are known for their refined use of color, subtle storytelling, and emotional depth, all of which contribute to the dreamlike, magical atmosphere of childhood.
