Skip to contentDorota Buczkowska – A Year in the Sanatorium
Water or ice? Fog, drizzle, thaw? Or perhaps half-ice and half-water? In Dorota Buczkowska’s new works, there are far more states of water than physics would suggest. Natural subtleties and nuances create a framework for the stories of characters the artist brings to life. This is a procession of strange figures: a woman with one eye, a girl taming a beast, a pair of girls who stared at their reflections in the surface of a fjord for too long.
Buczkowska creates them and gives them a voice through drawing interventions on photographs from Norway’s Sogn og Fjordane. Thus emerge tales of madness, aberration, and the strangeness hidden even in everyday gestures and the practice of life, where the main objective is to survive in adverse conditions of cold and dampness.
The artist’s drawn works supplement the narratives about the relationships of the characters and their internal landscapes. These are stories told in the first person, mainly by women. Fragmented, abrupt, and not always adhering to the strict rules of logic, they are both simple and specific. They can be treated as a universal collection of advice that might work—to some extent—in any geographical location and near any body of water.
