Mieczysław Wiśniewski (born 17 November 1925 in Warsaw – died 2006, Warsaw) was a Polish draughtsman, graphic artist, illustrator, and painter.
During the Second World War he studied at the School of Drawing and Painting run by Adam Rychtarski. From 1949 he worked as a graphic artist at the Ministry of National Defence Publishing House (Wydawnictwo MON). He illustrated numerous books and specialized in military-themed illustration.
In the late 1960s he was invited to work in comics. He produced one issue of the Kapitan Żbik series and began work on Podziemny front (The Underground Front), for which he drew six issues.
In 1970 the publishing house Sport i Turystyka launched Kapitan Kloss, a comic-book adaptation of the television series Stawka większa niż życie (More Than Life at Stake). The scripts were written by Andrzej Szypulski and Zbigniew Safjan—the screenwriters of the TV series—who used the joint pen name Andrzej Zbych. The artist was selected through a competition. Wiśniewski abandoned his ongoing series to focus on Kapitan Kloss.
The initial commission covered twelve monthly issues. The face of the main character was to resemble Stanisław Mikulski, who played the lead role in the television series; the remaining characters did not have to resemble their screen counterparts. After the first issues were published, the publisher commissioned eight additional installments.
The short production time for each issue (one month), combined with the need to balance comic work with his regular employment, took a toll on the artist’s health. After completing the series, he retired and devoted himself to painting, primarily works with battle and military themes. He died in 2006.
