A Warsaw-based talent known for his satirical drawings, culinary mastery, hunting adventures, social gatherings, and—of course—his unforgettable illustrations in children’s books. Like many illustrators active during the 1960s to 1980s, he worked intensely and prolifically.
In addition to illustrating children’s literature, he created posters, postcards, and satirical drawings and caricatures for Polish magazines such as Szpilki, Świat, Dookoła Świata, and Kurier Polski. He also took on international commissions, contributing to publications like Norway’s Aftenposten and Denmark’s Politiken.
For decades, his “studio” was a simple fold-out desk hidden inside a wall unit—a modest setup that produced countless beloved works. His illustrations can be found in books by authors such as Wanda Chotomska, Janina Porazińska, Ewa Szelburg-Zarembina, and Wiktor Woroszylski. One of his most iconic works is the visual interpretation of Grandma on the Apple Tree by Mira Lobe.
Pokora’s signature style—characterized by curly, whimsical lines, vivid colors, and a healthy dose of humor—made his work instantly recognizable.
In recent years, his art has seen a resurgence in popularity. Publishers have been reissuing books illustrated by Pokora; for instance, the publishing house Dwie Siostry has included three of his works in their Masters of Illustration series. His artworks have also been performing strongly in the graphic art auction market.
